AR sculpture

In collaboration with Kinfolk App, this sculpture is accessible through a cell phone and reimagines monuments as dynamic and not limited by physical space. When the viewer aims their phone at any empty space and uses the app, a three dimensional figure of Biddy Mason appears. A formerly enslaved woman, Biddy Mason was forced to walk from Mississippi to Utah in a wagon caravan. Upon arriving in California, and learning that her bondage was illegal, she successfully won her children’s and her own freedom in court. She became a millionaire within her lifetime and owned property in what is now Downtown Los Angeles. To honor her legacy, Mason is monumentalized seated and daydreaming. The AR monument was activated by a performance piece in Downtown Los Angeles a few blocks away from Biddy Mason’s home.
